gum disease (gingivitis)

Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth and are inflamed?

Gingivitis is a common condition where the gums become inflamed and swollen, bleeding occurs when teeth are cleaned. It occurs when food particles become lodged in the base of the teeth and the gums swell due to infection.

Gum disease describes swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.

If you have a diret that includes lots of sugary foods than you are more at risk of developing gingivitis, so increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables and cut back on sugary foods and drinks.

Foods rich in Vitamin C such as tomatoes, green peppers, strawberries, citrus fruits are all recommended, or be sure to take a Vitamin C supplement.

Sunflower seeds and sesame seeds are reputed to help as they help develop strong teeth and gums.

Women may be more prone to gingivitis during pregnancy because the increase in the hormone oestrogen makes the gums spongy and more susceptible to these problems.

Brush and floss your teeth regularly - at least twice a day - and more carefully during pregnancy and visit your dentist and oral hygienist at the first sign of trouble.

Treatment for Gingivitis

Mouthwashes, of which there are many to chose from will encourage healing. They should be swilled round the mouth and spat out and should never be swallowed.

Your dentist can advise on tratment and reccommed a mouthwash to use as well as reviewing your oral hygiene standards.
